A complete Scallywagon van build covers everything from bare shell to road-ready. Here is what every client receives when they commit to a full build with our Fife, Washington team.
Before anything is ordered or touched, we invest serious time in understanding your build. This is not a 15-minute call with a standard form to fill out. It is a detailed conversation about your travel life: where you go, who you travel with, what your ideal trip looks like, what gear you carry, what your typical departure routine is, and what you have tried before that did or did not work.
From that conversation, our team designs your complete van system. Electrical load calculations, suspension specifications, layout design, heating requirements, kitchen configuration, and exterior build-out are all planned together before a single component is ordered or a single cut is made. Every decision is documented, reviewed with you, and approved before we begin.
Clients who go through this consultation consistently tell us this stage alone is more thorough than the entire process they experienced with other shops. That is by design. A build that is not properly planned at the start will show its gaps eventually, and usually at the worst possible time.
What this stage includes:
Detailed travel style and use case consultation
Electrical load analysis and system design
Suspension and exterior specification
Interior layout design with sleeping and storage planning
Heating and climate system selection
Kitchen and appliance configuration
Component and brand selection with full transparency
Complete build plan review and approval before work begins
A properly built van starts with what is behind the walls and under the floor. Structural preparation and insulation are not glamorous stages of a build, but they are among the most important. Done right, they determine how comfortable the van is in varied climates, how quiet it is on the highway, how well the interior holds temperature on a cold night, and how long the build lasts before moisture or rust becomes a problem.
We treat every surface of the van interior with sound-deadening material before installing thermal insulation chosen specifically for Washington state's climate range. Not the cheapest option available. Not a single material is applied everywhere. The right insulation for each area of the van, installed with the care and attention it deserves, because no client should be cold in their van in November because someone cut corners in January.
What this stage includes:
Full interior surface preparation and cleaning
Sound deadening installation throughout
Thermal insulation selected for Washington state climate
Vapor barrier installation where required
Subfloor preparation and flooring installation
Structural reinforcement where specified by the build design
We build every complete van electrical system around Victron Energy components, the most trusted platform for serious off-grid power. Every system in a Scallywagon complete build is custom-designed to your actual power consumption, not a generic package that may or may not match how you travel.
Lithium battery banks sized to your load. Solar panels sized to realistic sun exposure across Washington's four seasons. A Victron inverter/charger for shore power connectivity and clean AC output. Smart battery monitoring so you always know exactly where your power stands. Shore power inlet for campground hookups. Clean, organized, labeled wiring runs that are built for long-term reliability and straightforward serviceability years down the road.
The electrical system is often what determines whether a trip goes the way it was supposed to or not. We build ours like it matters, because it does.
What this stage includes:
Victron Energy inverter/charger installation
Lithium LiFePO4 battery bank installation
Roof-mounted solar panel array
DC-DC alternator charging system
Shore power inlet installation
Victron SmartShunt battery monitoring
120V AC outlets and USB charging ports throughout
Dedicated circuits for all major electrical loads
Clean, labeled wiring runs built for long-term reliability
For off-road adventure builds and family weekenders that need genuine capability on Washington state's back roads and forest tracks, suspension and exterior work is where the build gets its capability. We build around Agile Off-Road lift kits, heavy-duty roof rack systems, Flarespace wheel well extensions, and the underbody protection that serious off-road travel demands.
Not every complete build requires a full off-road exterior treatment, and we design this stage accordingly. Family weekender clients who primarily travel on maintained roads may only need a roof rack and minimal exterior additions. Off-road adventure clients heading into serious Washington backcountry get the full treatment: lifted suspension, capable tires, skid plates, recovery points, and auxiliary lighting.
Every exterior decision is made with your specific build and your specific travel in mind.
What this stage includes (varies by build type):
Agile Off-Road lift kit installation where specified
Wheel and tire package installation
Roof rack system installation
Flarespace wheel well extension installation
Skid plate and underbody protection
Recovery points and tow hardware
Auxiliary lighting installation
Exterior storage and mounting solutions
Year-round comfort, whatever the season.
Washington state has four real seasons and a climate that demands a quality heating system if you want to use your van year-round, which we strongly encourage. A Scallywagon complete build always includes a properly installed and properly sized diesel heating system, because a van that is only comfortable between May and September is a van that sits unused for half the year.
We install Espar diesel heater systems and Timberline hydronic heating systems, depending on the build requirements and client preferences. Both are proven, quiet, fuel-efficient, and designed for the kind of extended use that family travel and backcountry adventure demand. For clients who plan to camp through Washington winters, a quality diesel heating system is one of the most important investments in the entire build.
Roof vent fans for warm summer nights. Window treatments for climate management and privacy. Ventilation designed for condensation management during wet Washington winters. Every climate element in a Scallywagon complete build is chosen and installed to work together across the full range of conditions you will encounter.
What this stage includes:
Espar diesel heater installation
Timberline hydronic heating system installation
Roof vent fan installation
Window installation and treatment
Condensation and ventilation management
Climate insulation integration with the structural stage
Custom cabinetry and interior fabrication is where the Scallywagon build really comes to life. This is the stage that is most visible, most personal, and most directly connected to how you experience your van every single day.
Every cabinet, shelf, bed platform, and storage system in a Scallywagon complete build is designed and built by our team in Fife, Washington. Nothing is off-the-shelf, nothing is generic, and nothing is installed without a clear reason for being exactly where it is. Materials are chosen for durability and the realities of van life: surfaces that clean easily, hardware that holds up under vibration, and construction that stays solid over years of real travel.
The kitchen setup is designed for actual cooking on actual trips, not just appearances. Bed platforms are designed to maximize sleeping space and storage simultaneously. Every storage decision is made with your specific gear list and travel routine in mind.
What this stage includes:
Custom cabinetry design and fabrication
Bed platform construction
Kitchen setup with cooktop, sink, and counter space
12V refrigerator installation
Gear storage systems tailored to your travel
Interior lighting system installation
Hardware and finishing details throughout
Seating and workspace options where layout allows
Your build is not done until every system works exactly as it should.
Before any Scallywagon complete build leaves our Fife, Washington shop, every system is tested under real-world conditions. Electrical load is verified. Heating systems are run to a temperature. Water systems are checked for pressure and leaks. Suspension geometry is confirmed. Interior hardware is inspected. Every detail is reviewed against the original build plan.
When your van passes our internal standard, we schedule your delivery walkthrough. This is not a quick handover and a handshake. It is a thorough walk-through of every system in your van so that you leave our Fife, Washington shop completely confident in every aspect of your build. How to manage your electrical system. How to operate your heating. How your storage systems are organized. How to get the most out of every trip from day one.
What this stage includes:
Full systems testing against build specifications
Electrical load and charging system verification
Heating system run-test and calibration
Water system pressure and leak check
Interior hardware and finish inspection
Complete client walkthrough of all systems
Documentation of installed components and specifications
Post-delivery support for any questions after your first trips
Ford Transit - The Ford Transit is one of the most popular platforms for complete van builds. Available in multiple roof heights, wheelbases, and drivetrains, the Transit offers excellent parts availability, a strong aftermarket support network, and enough interior volume to support both off-road adventure builds and family weekender configurations. For clients who want a capable, well-supported platform, the Transit is often our first recommendation.
Mercedes Sprinter - The Sprinter remains the benchmark platform for serious van builds. Its tall interior, solid build quality, and extensive aftermarket support make it an excellent choice for off-road builds and larger family weekender configurations. The 144 and 170 wheelbases offer flexibility for different build requirements. We work with both the 2500 and 4500 series.
Ram Promaster - The Promaster offers the widest interior of any major van platform, which makes it a particularly strong choice for family weekender builds where layout and sleeping width matter. Front-wheel drive limits extreme off-road applications, but for families who travel primarily on maintained roads and established campgrounds, the Promaster's interior volume is hard to beat.

Complete van builds at our Fife, Washington shop typically take two to four months from build start to delivery, depending on scope, platform, and parts availability. We set a clear, honest timeline during the planning phase and provide regular updates throughout the build process. Every client always knows exactly where their build stands. We would rather give you an accurate timeline than compress the build and compromise the result.
You are welcome to bring your own van to our Fife, Washington shop or source one independently. We work on customer-owned vehicles across all major platforms. If you have not purchased a van yet, we are happy to advise on what to look for based on your build type, your family size, and how you plan to travel. The right platform makes a meaningful difference in the finished build, and we want to help you start with the right foundation.
We design your build with you upfront precisely to avoid mid-build changes that can impact timelines and costs. That said, we understand that clients sometimes have new ideas once they see the build taking shape. We handle those conversations openly, communicate any impact on scope or timeline clearly, and never make a significant change without your explicit approval.
We stand behind every complete build that leaves our Fife, Washington shop. If something needs attention after delivery, reach out to us directly, and we will take care of it. We document every component and specification in your build so that any follow-up work is handled with full context and accountability. Our relationship with every client does not end at delivery.
Yes, in most cases. We assess every van that comes into our Fife, Washington shop before committing to a complete build on it. If prior work meets our quality standard, we build from there. If it does not, we will tell you honestly what needs to be addressed and what that will involve. We have worked with clients who came to us with partially completed builds that needed to be brought up to the standard they deserved.
